Should I buy it? Seven questions to ask before buying clothes

Most regretted clothing purchases fail the same few tests. Run through these seven questions before you pay. If you can't answer yes to most of them, wait a few days.

The seven questions

None of these needs a spreadsheet. They work in a shop, on a checkout page, or from a screenshot a friend sent you.

  • Do I own something that does the same job? A fourth white shirt rarely earns its place.
  • Can I name three outfits I'd wear it in, using clothes I already own?
  • Does it fit the way I live, or the way I imagine living?
  • Do the colours work with what's in my closet?
  • Have I checked the fabric, the care label and the reviews for sizing and quality complaints?
  • Is the price fair for the quality, and would I still want it at that price?
  • Will I still want it after a 48-hour pause?

Why question two matters most

Naming three outfits is the quickest honest test. If you can't build them from clothes you already own, the item is probably a standalone purchase that will need more purchases to work. That's how closets fill up with pieces that never get worn.

Reading reviews for clothes

Star ratings hide the details that matter for clothes. Skim the written reviews for the same complaints repeating: runs small, thin fabric, colour different from the photos, shrinks after washing. One complaint is noise; the same one five times is a pattern.

Doing the check faster

If you keep a digital wardrobe, the first four questions become a lookup instead of a guess. Pehno's Should I buy it? check takes a product link or a screenshot and compares the item with what you own, then gives a Buy it, Think it over or Skip it verdict with a score, price and review notes, and the outfits it would make with your clothes.
