What is a digital wardrobe, and how do you build one?

A digital wardrobe is a catalogue of the clothes you already own, kept in an app or a spreadsheet, with a photo of each piece. Its job is simple: when you stand in front of your closet, or in front of a checkout page, you can see everything you have in one place.

Why people keep one

Most closets hide things. Pieces at the back get forgotten, near-duplicates pile up, and the same five outfits get worn on repeat. A catalogue makes the whole closet visible at once, so you can see what you actually have before deciding what to wear or buy.

  • Plan outfits without pulling everything out of the closet.
  • Spot duplicates before buying a fourth black tee.
  • See gaps, such as no layering piece for cold evenings.
  • Pack for a trip from a list instead of from memory.

How to build one, step by step

Start small. Photographing everything in one go is the main reason people abandon the project, so begin with the pieces you wear most and add the rest over a few weeks.

  • Photograph each piece on a plain background in good light, flat or on a hanger, one piece per photo.
  • Record the basics: type, main colour, fabric and fit. Add a note for anything you are unsure about, such as a shrunk sweater.
  • Sort by category (tops, bottoms, layers, shoes, accessories) so browsing is quick.
  • Mark pieces you no longer wear outside, such as faded or tight ones, so they don't clutter your outfit planning.
  • Add new purchases when they arrive, and remove what you give away.

Doing it by hand or with an app

A folder of photos plus a spreadsheet works, and it costs nothing. The weak point is upkeep: tagging each piece by hand takes time, and a plain list can't suggest outfits or tell you whether a new item overlaps with something you own.

Wardrobe apps remove the typing. In Pehno, for example, you photograph a piece, scan one mirror selfie to pick out every garment, or share the link of something you bought, and AI tags the type, colour, fabric and fit for you.

Keeping it useful

A catalogue only helps if it matches your real closet. Add each new piece the week you get it, and do a quick review every season: remove what you've given away and mark what no longer fits. Ten minutes a season is enough.
