How to pack a suitcase using clothes you already own

Overpacking usually comes from packing outfits for situations that never happen. A better method is to pick a small set of pieces that combine freely, then check the numbers against your trip.

Start from the trip, not the closet

Write down the days, the weather and the activities. Count how many different occasions you'll actually have, such as a travel day, a dinner or a day of walking, and plan one flexible outfit per type.

Choose a colour story

Pack around two neutrals and one accent. When the tops, bottoms and layers share a palette, every top works with every bottom, so five or six pieces can produce many outfits.

A simple formula

For a week away, this is a reasonable starting point. Scale it to your trip and your laundry options.

  • Three to four tops that work with every bottom.
  • Two bottoms, plus one extra if the weather or dress code changes.
  • One layer for cool evenings or air conditioning.
  • Two pairs of shoes, one of them comfortable for walking all day.
  • Underwear and socks for the days you won't have laundry access.

Check outfits before you pack

Lay out the outfits you expect to wear and make sure each piece appears in at least two of them. A piece that works in only one outfit is the first to leave the suitcase.

Use your digital wardrobe as the list

If your clothes are catalogued, packing becomes picking from a list instead of searching the closet. In Pehno you start a suitcase for a trip, pick what you're taking, and it tells you what else to pack, what's missing and what to wear each day.
